Offshore Safety – Engine
The course aims to introduce Engineer Officers to offshore vessel layout, equipment and operations. The course covers the variety of operations carried out on board offshore support vessels, including DP operations, cargo supply and anchor handling operations. The course emphasizes the need for good plant maintenance and watch
The course is designed for participants with little or no offshore vessel experience. This course is ideal for new cadets, junior officers or engineers currently outside the offshore environment wishing to enter the industry.
Course participants completing this course will assimilate theoretical knowledge and practical skills to support a range of OSV operations. The course covers the following aspects:
- Starting and stopping ships plant for port departures/arrivals and DP operations alongside offshore
- Offshore regulations and guidance including Flag State, AMSA, NOPSEMA PSLA, GOMO.
- Engine room watchkeeping best practices.
- Offshore vessels plant designs; diesel electric, hybrid or conventional shaft.
- Associated plant operation, purifiers, compressors, fridge systems, air conditioning and sewage plant
- Introduction to anchor handling deck equipment maintenance, including winches, pins and forks.
- Bulk cargo operations; dry bulk and wet bulk, NLS and oil cargo theory and simulated operations.
- Mud storage, transfers and tank washing.
- Simulated plant operation with cascade failures. Plant operational priorities and operators options.
- Conduct after action peer review of simulated cases and feedback.
- Fi-Fi firefighting plant classification and operation.
Participants must hold or be undertaking training towards a minimum of Engineer Watchkeeper Certificate. Participants may benefit from having some previous offshore experience. Other industry personnel may attend and
will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy Requirements
This course requires the ability to read and interpret typical product specifications, job sheets, procedures, and safety information as provided to operators. Writing is required to the level of completing workplace forms. Numeracy is required to calculate cargo capacities and pumping rates. The course is delivered in English.
Assessment & Competency Achievement
There is no formal assessment carried out at the completion of the course. 100% attendance and participation in the course is required. Participants will be awarded a Certificate of Training on completion of the course
